A Community Rallies Together in Puerto Rico

In a vibrant neighborhood by a clear pond in Puerto Rico, a young frog named Martina learned that kindness can unite a community. The area buzzed with lively creatures, including a cautious iguana.

Hurricane Warning Sparks Concern

One cloudy morning, chaos erupted as Señor Rooster announced a hurricane warning. Martina, recalling a past storm that swept her away, knew she had to act quickly.

Scanning the pond, Martina saw Doña Iguana on a fragile branch, realizing her home wouldn’t withstand the storm. Determined to help, she rallied the other animals.

“Doña Iguana needs a stronger house,” Martina urged. “We must help her before it’s too late.”

Overcoming Differences for a Common Cause

Despite past grievances with Doña Iguana, the animals agreed to assist. They gathered materials to fortify her shelter, understanding the importance of her presence for the ecosystem.

Together, they constructed a sturdy refuge, just in time for the impending storm. As they finished, Doña Iguana shared a secret for storing fresh water, a valuable lesson for the community.

Facing the Storm Together

As the hurricane raged, the animals sheltered safely. The next morning, despite the pond’s muddy state, the rock basins held clear water, thanks to Doña Iguana’s advice.

Grateful for her knowledge, the animals gifted her a pile of dandelions, a favorite treat. The storm had not only brought them together but also fostered mutual respect and appreciation.

This story, adapted from a Puerto Rican folk tale, highlights the significance of iguanas in the region. They are vital for seed dispersal, aiding the growth of tropical plants.
