Courage and Cunning Save a Friendship

A Tale of Unwavering Friendship

In a small African village, two boys, Ndemi and Jinjo, were born on the same day and grew up as inseparable friends. Despite their striking resemblance, their backgrounds were vastly different; Ndemi came from a wealthy family, while Jinjo’s family had little.

Acts of Bravery

Their youth was filled with typical adventures like hunting and exploring. Once, when Jinjo was knocked unconscious after capsizing in a canoe, Ndemi heroically saved him from drowning. Another time, Jinjo prevented Ndemi from falling off a cliff by grabbing him just in time.

A Journey Beyond Home

As they matured, Ndemi longed to explore beyond their village and invited Jinjo to join him. In a distant village, Ndemi met Malama, a captivating young woman. The two quickly fell in love, and Ndemi wished to marry her.

“I wish I could, but I can never marry,” Malama said, explaining her father’s impossible challenge for any suitor.

The Impossible Challenge

Determined, Ndemi approached Malama’s father, the Chief, who set a daunting task: survive six days in a windowless hut without food or water. Despite the risks, Ndemi accepted the challenge, driven by love.

Locked inside, Ndemi relied on Jinjo’s cunning plan. Each night, Jinjo discreetly provided sustenance through a reed inserted into the hut wall. However, the vigilant old woman guarding the hut grew suspicious.

A Twist of Fate

On the fifth night, the old woman intercepted the reed, threatening to expose their secret. Jinjo, desperate to save his friend, enlisted the help of a rat to communicate with ants. Together, they destroyed the evidence by consuming the reed.

“Told them I had a hot tip!” the Rat boasted, having convinced the ants.

A Joyous Reunion

When the old woman found no evidence, Ndemi was declared victorious. He married Malama, and the friends returned home, where Ndemi built Jinjo a grand house next to his own. Both friends eventually married, and their families grew together.

This retelling of a Nigerian folk tale highlights the power of friendship, courage, and cleverness.
