Princess Finds Love with a Frog Prince

An Unexpected Friendship Blossoms into Love

Once upon a time, a princess was pursued by countless suitors at her palace, yet none seemed to truly see her beyond her royal attire and crown.

Frustrated, she longed for her carefree childhood, fondly recalling a cherished ball that glittered in the sunlight. Searching for it, she found the ball and joyfully played with it in the palace yard.

However, a misstep sent the ball tumbling into the royal well. Distressed, she lamented her loss until a frog emerged from the water, offering assistance.

“Can I help you?” asked the Frog.

“Yes, please retrieve my ball!” the Princess replied, surprised by the talking frog.

The Frog agreed, but on one condition: that she spend time with him. Reluctantly, she consented, eager to have her ball back.

After retrieving the ball, the Princess dismissed the Frog’s request and returned to the palace. That evening, during dinner, the Frog appeared, reminding her of her promise.

“Did you promise to spend time with this Frog?” inquired the King.

Reluctantly, the Princess invited the Frog inside, and he joined them at the dining table. The conversation turned to matters of state, and the Frog’s insightful comment resonated with the Princess.

“There is more to a princess than her fine crown and royal dresses,” said the Frog.

Touched by his understanding, the Princess invited the Frog for a walk in the garden. As they shared laughter and admired the sunset, she realized the unexpected joy of his company.

In a moment of affection, she kissed the Frog’s cheek, triggering a magical transformation. In a puff of smoke, the Frog became a handsome prince, revealing an enchantment cast by a wicked witch.

The Prince explained that only a princess’s kiss could break the spell, a fate the witch had deemed impossible. Yet, it had happened, and the Princess recognized him as the kind soul she had come to cherish.

Years later, after marrying, they commissioned an artist to craft a bowl for her beloved ball, a symbol of their unique journey. Placed on their dining table, it sparkled in the sunlight, a testament to their love.

The Origin of ‘The Frog Prince’

The tale of ‘The Frog Prince’ dates back to the 9th century AD in India as a Sanskrit story, ‘The Frog Prince, or Iron Henry.’ In this version, a princess promises herself to a frog in gratitude for retrieving a golden ball. Disgusted, she hurls the frog against a wall, transforming him into a prince. This differs from the Brothers Grimm version, where a kiss breaks the spell.

This adaptation by Elaine Lindy for Stories to Grow By highlights the enduring appeal of this classic fairytale.
