Audun’s Daring Gift to Denmark’s King

Audun’s Bold Adventure Across the Seas

A thousand years ago, in the tranquil fjords of Iceland, a young man named Audun lived with his widowed mother, dreaming of adventures in distant lands. His opportunity arrived one summer when a Norwegian merchant, stranded by the impending winter, hired Audun for the season. In return, Audun would gain passage on the merchant’s ship come spring.

A Daring Purchase in Greenland

As the ice began to thaw, Audun embarked on his journey, first stopping in Greenland. There, captivated by the majestic polar bears, he spent all his earnings to purchase one, intending it as a gift for King Sven of Denmark. Audun believed this extraordinary gift would secure him favor with the Danish king.

Encounter with Norway’s King Harald

Upon reaching Norway, Audun’s bear drew attention, and he was summoned by King Harald. The Norwegian king, aware of the bear’s intended destination, was displeased due to the ongoing conflict with Denmark. Despite the tension, King Harald allowed Audun to proceed with his plan, on the condition that Audun would return to share how King Sven received the gift.

The Gift’s Reception in Denmark

Audun arrived in Denmark and presented the polar bear to King Sven, who was overjoyed. In gratitude, King Sven offered Audun a position at the palace and bestowed upon him a ship filled with cargo. Additionally, the king gave Audun a purse of silver and a golden ring, ensuring his safety and recognition even if misfortune struck.

Returning to Honor His Promise

On his return journey, Audun stopped in Norway to fulfill his promise to King Harald. He recounted the generous rewards from King Sven and, in a gesture of gratitude, offered the golden ring to King Harald, acknowledging the Norwegian king’s earlier mercy.

Moved by Audun’s gesture, King Harald showered him with gifts, affirming Audun’s honor and bravery.

A Triumphant Return Home

With favorable winds and a heart full of gratitude, Audun returned to Iceland, reuniting with his mother. His tale of courage and honor spread, securing his reputation as a respected and fortunate man.
